Saxony: Köpping donates blood and calls for imitation

Dresden (dpa / sn) - In view of the scarce reserves, Saxony's Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) has called for blood donations. "Please go donate blood and save lives with it!" She said on Sunday, according to a statement at the "Open Government District", after blood was drawn from her in the DRK blood donation mobile. The stocks in the blood banks have fallen sharply because of the holiday season, but many people urgently need different blood preparations every day. She herself donates again and again and is happy that she can help other people with it. "My request is: Join us, help replenish supplies and donate blood," she appealed. "Every pint counts!"

According to the ministry, the demand from the clinics remains high because during the lockdown, treatments that have been postponed are made up for in addition to normal operations. At the same time, the blood preparations obtained from the donor blood only have a short shelf life of five days to five weeks. "Travelling in the summer and a change in leisure time behavior in the good weather period are currently also having an effect on the blood donation volume."
