Saxony: Köpping: Midwifery services secured in Saxony

Leipzig (dpa / sn) - According to the Ministry of Health in Saxony, the provision of midwifery services is secured. Since 2018, 116 freelance midwives have been supported in setting up their own business with a grant of 5,000 euros, as the ministry announced on Thursday in Leipzig. Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) had reported at the university hospital there on the implementation of the findings from a midwifery study from 2019.

The provision of midwifery services in Saxony remains an important concern, emphasized the SPD politician. "And that's why, together with the associations and representatives, we have already implemented important milestones that are derived from the recommendations for action in the study."

Saxony was the first federal state to set up a coordination center at the Saxon Association of Midwives. This serves to support, advise and network midwives and the provision of midwifery services in the Free State of Saxony.

In addition, two courses in "midwifery" were started in 2021 at the Technical University in Dresden and at the University of Leipzig. The second year starts in October. This means that more than 50 new midwives will be able to obtain their professional license in Saxony every year in the future. There are currently around 900 midwives working in Bavaria. In October, the Saxon State Association of Midwives, together with the Ministry of Social Affairs, will hold a specialist day on the delivery room run by midwives.
