Leipzig/Dresden (dpa/sn) - Last generation activists blocked one of the main thoroughfares in Leipzig on Wednesday morning. Around 10 a.m., ten people gathered near the sports forum on Jahnallee, according to a spokeswoman for the group.
Several women took to the streets with banners and placards to stop traffic going in the direction of the train station. A few cars pushed past them, after which traffic came to a standstill. When the police came shortly afterwards, three participants were stuck on the street, it said.
A police spokeswoman could not yet confirm the sticking action, but said that a traffic jam had formed because of the protest action and that traffic was being diverted.
According to the last generation, only people who identify as Flinta people take part in the protests on the occasion of International Women's Day on Wednesday. Flinta stands for Women, Lesbian, Inter, Nonbinary, Trans and Agender.
With the road blockades, the activists are calling on the government to take effective action against climate change. "The social consequences of the climate catastrophe are not gender-neutral. Women and other marginalized groups are hit even harder by the climate catastrophe," said a spokesman.
Protest actions are also expected in Dresden on Wednesday afternoon. Around 4 p.m., one of the main thoroughfares is said to be blocked by three people, a spokesman for Latter Generation said.
