Saxony: Left complains about low pensions for tens of thousands of seniors

Berlin/Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The left-wing politician Sören Pellmann has complained about low pensions for many women and men in Saxony. "The pension is not stable, as the Chancellor and Minister of Labor claim. The fact that tens of thousands in Saxony with 45 years of insurance receive a pension of less than 1,000 euros is a slap in the face for those affected," Pellmann told the German Press Agency on Saturday. The Leipzig member of the Bundestag referred to information from the Federal Ministry of Labor, according to which 88,156 people in the Free State receive a statutory pension below the threshold of 1000 euros, although they can show at least 45 years of insurance.

"Life's work is not worth enough in view of the low level of pensions. Anyone who has been paying in for decades must be entitled to a pension that is good enough to live on," emphasized Pellmann. The new basic pension offers no protection against poverty in old age. "We need a higher pension level and, also in view of the skyrocketing prices, a poverty-proof minimum pension. The energy cost flat rate must be paid to all pensioners in Saxony and nationwide."
