Saxony: Leipzig bans campfires because of the risk of forest fires

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Due to persistent drought and a high risk of forest fires, the city of Leipzig has banned campfires. "The people of Leipzig are urgently required to behave carefully in green spaces and to pay attention to fire protection," the city emphasized on Monday. The ban applies "immediately" to the burning of open fires - including campfires. Campfire sites in the city forest, which have been designated by the forest authority, are an exception.

People should also be particularly careful when barbecuing and be at least 100 meters away from the forest, the message said. Little rain and strong evaporation have caused a permanent drought in the past few weeks.

According to the Sachsenforst state enterprise, the second highest level “high risk” for forest fires applied in parts of the districts of Leipzig and northern Saxony on Monday. According to the forecast, the risk in the district of Leipzig is also high on Wednesday, in some places even very high in northern Saxony.
