Saxony: Leipzig puts emergency accommodation for refugees into operation

Leipzig (dpa / sn) - The city of Leipzig wants to put additional emergency accommodation back into operation. The city announced on Friday that the first residents should move into the accommodation on Arno-Nitzsche-Strasse in the second half of November. In the future, up to 150 people from a wide variety of backgrounds will be accommodated in the winter-proof tent. Refugees from Ukraine had already been accommodated there from May to August 2022.

After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, around 9,800 refugees have come to Leipzig, it said. At the end of October, more than 1,800 of them were living in initial reception centers in Leipzig. According to the city, the city operates a total of 35 community accommodations, a transitional hostel and an emergency shelter. Around 4200 people could be accommodated in this way. Four more accommodations with a total of 650 places, including those in Arno-Nitzsche-Straße, are being planned.

According to the Saxony State Directorate, a total of 56,373 Ukrainian refugees had been registered in the Free State by the beginning of November. Most of them would be accommodated in the municipalities, only 218 people would currently be accommodated temporarily in the reception facilities of the state directorate.

In addition to refugees from Ukraine, 14,679 asylum seekers from other countries had come to Saxony between the beginning of this year and the end of October, the directorate said on request.
