Saxony: Leipzig's Grassi trade fair shows beauty rather than functionality

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Close to nature, decorative, high quality: This year's Grassi trade fair is to be opened in Leipzig on Friday. Until October 23, interested parties can examine and buy current works by around 140 artists in the fields of jewellery, ceramics and porcelain, textiles and accessories, glass, furniture, metal and paper. The sales fair takes place in Leipzig's Grassi Museum. Exhibitors came from South Korea and the USA, among others, for the weekend.

This year's sales fair for applied art and design will also feature French trends that are less about functionality and more about appearance. Among other things, the works of the Swiss artist Cecile Feilchenfeldt will be exhibited. The textile designer has lived in Paris for more than twenty years and works with international fashion houses of haute couture such as Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Walter Van Beirendonck. She processes leftover pearls into elastic jewellery.

In order to honor special work, five exhibitors selected by a specialist jury will be honored with prizes on the evening before the opening of the trade fair. Among other things, the Grassi Prize of the Carl and Anneliese Goerdeler Foundation, which is endowed with 3000 euros, is to be awarded. Also being presented for the first time is the Jan Willems Prize, which is endowed with 1,500 euros and honors creative people who work with wood.
