Leipzig/Gütersloh (dpa/sn) - Among the major German university cities, Leipzig has the second-largest proportion of courses with restricted admission. A total of 61 percent of all courses in the trade fair city have a numerus clausus (NC), which means that only a third of the subjects are open to students regardless of their Abitur grade, according to the CHE Center for University Development in Gütersloh. Only Saarbrücken, with 64 percent, is ahead of Leipzig among the university cities with more than 17,000 students. In Dresden, the rate is 34 percent.

According to this, Saxony is in the midfield nationwide with 37.4 percent. At 64.8 percent, Hamburg has the highest proportion of degree programs with restricted admission. Thuringia has the lowest proportion of NC-reinforced degree programs at 20.7 percent. Nationwide, according to the information, 39.7 percent of all courses in the coming winter semester have a numerus clausus.

In Saxony, courses in law, economics, social sciences and social sciences have the most admission restrictions (41.3 percent), courses in engineering only about a sixth (15.9 percent).
