Saxony: Leipzig zoo director Junhold: It was a fulfilling 25 years

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The Leipzig Zoo has something to celebrate on Tuesday: Director Jörg Junhold has been in office for exactly 25 years. "These were fulfilling, if not the most beautiful 25 years of my life," said the 58-year-old of the German Press Agency in Leipzig. Born in Brandenburg, the job is exactly the right mix of different tasks: "I fight for a better world, manage the company and stand in public with my office - that's really fun."

The veterinarian came to Leipzig for his studies in 1985 and fell in love with the city and the people there. When he took up his post at the zoo in 1997, it was a "major renovation task". "At that time we decided to flee to the front," Junhold recalled. This is one of the reasons why the Leipzig Zoo is now one of the best internationally, is recognized in the professional world and is involved in international exchange on a daily basis.

And the zoo will not stand still in the future either, announced the jubilee, whose favorite animal is the elephant. "We will realize our Tierra del Fuego and also implement other projects." Junhold then looks forward to 2028. "Because then the zoo will be 150 years old - and that will be celebrated," said the zoo director.
