Saxony: Leipzig/Halle Airport: protests against expansion announced

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Opponents of the planned expansion of Leipzig/Halle Airport have announced protests for the coming week. On Friday there will be a vigil in front of the Saxony State Directorate. The authority is responsible for approving the project. The protest alliance “Transform LEJ” announced that a demonstration was also planned for Saturday. There should also be "acts of civil disobedience".

Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG wants to invest 500 million euros in the expansion of the airport. Among other things, the number of slots for cargo planes is to be significantly increased. Leipzig/Halle is the second largest cargo airport in Germany after Frankfurt and number 4 in Europe. There is a night flight permit for cargo planes.

The planning approval process for the expansion began in 2020. There were numerous objections to the plans. When the state directorate will make a decision is open.
