Saxony: Less acreage for tree fruit: More organic production

Kamenz (dpa / sn) - The area under tree fruit has fallen in Saxony. While fruit trees were grown on an area of 3081 hectares this year, five years earlier it was 3382 hectares, as the State Statistical Office announced in Kamenz on Wednesday. However, the Free State still has the fourth largest area under cultivation of all federal states. With 17,644 hectares, Baden-Württemberg had the largest tree fruit cultivation area in Germany. The most important type of tree fruit in Saxony is still the apple, followed by sour and sweet cherries, plums and pears.

The proportion of organic production has increased. In 2022, this was 22 percent (672 hectares). Compared to the last survey in 2017, this corresponds to an increase of 27 percent in the area of completely organically farmed land.
