Saxony: Linke: High energy prices must be cushioned fairly

Dresden (dpa/sn) - In view of the rise in energy prices, the leftists are demanding a fair distribution of the burden. "If you want justice, you have to provide targeted relief - the best way to do that is with state intervention in pricing, which would also benefit utility companies and housing cooperatives," explained party leader Susanne Schaper on Thursday. At the same time, she criticized Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck, who rejects a government-set cap on gas prices.

"I can't understand Habeck's argument that people would waste gas if it wasn't quite so expensive," explained Schaper. The federal government has many instruments at its disposal. The increased energy prices would have to be cushioned fairly - financed, for example, by an excess profit tax for oil companies.

The Green politician Habeck had argued that the state could not fully absorb the price increases. But the burden should be shared fairly.
