Saxony: logistics companies generate electricity via parking lot roofs

Rackwitz (dpa/sn) - The car logistics company Mosolf will in future generate electricity for around 5,000 households at its location in Rackwitz (Northern Saxony) with parking lot roofs. The system service provider put a photovoltaic parking lot roof into operation on Thursday, which it says is the largest in Germany. The plant can generate as much electricity as 5,000 two-person households consume in a year, said project manager Georg Tjaden.

The Mosolf Group realized the system with Hyundai. The car manufacturer handles around 30,000 cars a year at the Rackwitz site that come from its plant in the Czech Republic. Mosolf prepares them there so that they can go to the end customer. Around 6,000 brand-new cars can be parked under the solar roofs in the future. This protects you from the weather - and the roofs also generate electricity on a large scale. It is fed into the local operator's network.

According to Mosolf, an amount in the double-digit millions was invested in the photovoltaic system. It should be completely finished by the middle of next year. Then it will be the size of 20 soccer fields and will be able to generate 16 megawatts at its peak, said Tjaden. According to the CEO, Jörg Mosolf, the company is planning similar systems at other locations. The aim is to generate 100 megawatts of electricity. The Mosolf Group has its headquarters in Kirchheim/Teck. It employs around 3500 people.
