Saxony: Minister sits in prison: praise for servants

Dresden/Görlitz (dpa/sn) - Minister of Justice Katja Meier (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) accompanied employees in Görlitz prison for a full shift. Their work "is about much more than opening and closing the cell doors every day," she said on Thursday. With their commitment, they fulfilled "a task that is important to society as a whole". They are supervisors, but above all they are supervisors and contact persons for the detainees in crisis situations and in contact with families and authorities.

"Working on the grassroots involves a lot more than opening and closing the cell doors every day," said Meier, referring to rehabilitation as the primary goal of the penal system. And for their success, humanity and treatment orientation are the decisive factors. According to the ministry, 2,957 people are currently being held in Bavaria - 171 of them in the Görlitz prison.
