Saxony: Ministry is looking for a solution for the trend sport of wing foiling

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Saxony's Ministry of Economic Affairs is looking for a way to enable the trend sport of wingfoiling, which has been regulated up to now, to a greater extent than before. "Since there are no uniform regulations for foil surfing nationwide and there are no corresponding risk analyzes available, foil surfing can currently only be carried out with an exceptional permit," the ministry said on Monday on request. This is granted by the Saxony State Directorate (LDS). It is also the supreme shipping authority in the Free State. Arched hydrofoils below the surface of the water are called foils.

The ministry is in contact with the actors and associations to find a solution, it said. A study was commissioned to investigate the potential dangers of using foils in more detail. "In addition, a solution should be worked out together with the associations and responsible lake managers in order to search for, apply for and identify exceptions to water sections in the Free State of Saxony as quickly as possible. Talks on this are being continued."

"Nowhere else is there such a comprehensive ban on foiling. This gives Saxony a unique selling point and what is the dream of every product manager is currently developing into a tourism nightmare for Saxony," emphasized Thomas Weinhardt, 1st Chairman of the VDWS.

The ministry pointed out that when the Saxon Shipping Ordinance was last amended in 2014, neither wing surfing nor foil surfing was known. This means that these surfing sports would not have been taken into account in the regulation. After these new and not yet approved sports had already been carried out on Saxon waters in the past two years, the first warnings and a warning fine had been issued by the water protection police to a foil surfer.
