Saxony: Ministry: No four-day week for Saxony's schools

Dresden (dpa / sn) - A four-day week in schools, as Saxony-Anhalt wants to try out, is currently not an option for Saxony. "So far we have not had such considerations," said the spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Dirk Reelfs, on request. Above all, this cannot be a solution to the shortage of teachers, which also exists in Saxony. However, in the course of the Bildungsland 2030 project, there is a discussion of how distance learning can be used and implemented in the future "for pedagogical reasons".

The 4-plus-1 model is to be tested at twelve secondary and community schools in Saxony-Anhalt in the new school year. The students are taught in the schools over four days; the fifth day should be dealt with relatively creatively. According to the Ministry of Education, digital learning is just as possible as visits to companies and practical learning days. There is a shortage of teachers, particularly in secondary schools. The result is a drop in class. However, the ministry does not want the model to be understood as an instrument against the shortage of teachers.

Educational organizations have criticized the project. The Association for Education and Upbringing complained that the step was nothing more than an admission of a personnel policy that had failed for years and a veiled reduction in the timetable.

Distance learning has advantages and disadvantages, emphasized Reelfs with a view to the experiences from the nationwide school closures in the corona pandemic. While many high-performing students approached this with motivation and benefited from it, weaker students often had problems solving tasks in a self-organized manner. It is therefore important to weigh up the targeted use carefully.
