Raising carp in the ponds around the baroque castle of Moritzburg near Dresden has a long tradition. After a difficult season, fishing is imminent.
Moritzburg (dpa/sn) - Teichwirtschaft Moritzburg GmbH is expecting a meager yield this year due to the adverse weather conditions. Managing Director Henry Lindner estimated the expected yield at 50 to 60 tons of fish for food on Tuesday, which is only about a third of the average amount in previous years. The main reason he gave was the long drought. At the beginning of the year, the ponds were still well filled, but due to the lack of precipitation, the water level continued to fall.
According to Lindner, emergency fishing was even considered in the summer because the "fish were almost dry". But such a fishing at low water level and high heat can also go wrong. Rain later improved the situation somewhat, but the water levels are still low today.
"Another problem was the lack of kit fish," said Lindner. Many fell victim to cormorants. After all, the extremely high feed prices would also determine the result. In order to save feed, the decision was made to produce less. Lindner also assumed that the other producers in Saxony were also struggling with these problems and spoke of a "mixed year".
Nevertheless, the traditional fishing should now be celebrated again after a two-year Corona forced break. Next weekend, the municipality of Moritzburg is once again expecting thousands of guests from all over the region to the "Fish and Forest Festival". The first catch of fish begins early in the morning (9 a.m.). Later, among other things, there will be show cooking and an auction of fish for the benefit of the Albert Schweitzer Children's Village in Steinbach. More than 100 retailers and restaurateurs have registered for the market.
