Saxony: Nabu calls for a ban on private New Year's Eve fireworks

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The nature conservation association Nabu in Saxony is calling for a ban on private fireworks for New Year's Eve. The national association referred to the negative consequences for animals and the environment on Thursday. In addition to fine dust and rubbish, the noise causes stress and panic in many animals. Birds would be chased from their roosts, and wildlife such as foxes and beavers could suffer hearing damage. The Nabu also pointed out the danger of pollutants falling from the sky through fireworks. These could accumulate in soil and water.

Nevertheless, the association does not call for an absolute ban on fireworks: "Centrally organized fireworks or light shows by cities and communities would be a way of welcoming the year in a more environmentally and nature-friendly way," it said in a statement. In the past two years, there had been a ban on the sale of fireworks in Saxony on New Year's Eve - due to corona-related restrictions. For this year there is no ban so far.
