Saxony: New center for metabolic diseases at Dresden University

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The new Center for Metabolic-Immunological Diseases and Therapy Technologies Saxony (MITS) was opened at the Dresden University Hospital on Monday. According to the TU Dresden, specialists in internal medicine, endocrinology, immunology, surgery, cell biology and transplantation medicine have laboratories, offices and rooms for research, teaching and therapy in the modern new building. The investment of 35.1 million euros was financed by the federal and state governments, including initial equipment and large equipment. According to the announcement, the metabolism in the organism can be completely recorded, cells can be isolated and cell functions can be observed.

At MITS, science and medicine will "develop methods for the diagnosis and prevention of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, which will then be quickly transferred to innovative therapeutic approaches," said MITS spokesman Stefan Bornstein. For example, research is continuing on the bioreactor, which will be transplanted under the skin on the peritoneum in the future, similar to a pacemaker, and will produce insulin as required and deliver it to the body. "It's about a new, innovative understanding of how the regulation of the immune system works," said Bornstein.

According to clinical information, nationwide more than eight million people suffer from diabetes, their number is increasing daily by 1000 sufferers - in the past 20 years by almost 40 percent. About every fifth person in the elderly population is affected. The consequences are visible obesity and an increased risk of heart attack, blindness and circulatory disorders.
