Saxony: Only a few municipalities in Saxony increased the property tax in 2021

The property tax is an important source of income for the municipalities. If they're short on cash, they can raise the tax. But in Saxony that happened only rarely in the past year.

Dresden (dpa / sn) - Last year, only a few municipalities in Saxony increased property tax. In Free State, there was an increase in the assessment rate in only five percent of the cities, according to a study by the consulting firm Ernst that was published on Friday

When comparing the tax burden from property tax, each resident in Saxony paid an average of 127 euros to their home municipality in 2021 - two euros more than in the previous year. This puts Saxony in ninth place among the 13 non-city states and below the national average. This was 175 euros in 2021. The burden was highest in North Rhine-Westphalia with 216 euros, lowest in Brandenburg with 110.

Nationwide, property tax also rose more slowly in 2021 than in previous years. According to the EY study, eight percent of German municipalities increased their assessment rate in 2021. This figure was last lower in 2009.

This is basically related to a billion surplus in the cities from last year, explained the head of the government department

The pressure to act has thus decreased and fewer municipalities would have had to raise taxes, emphasized Schneider. The effect of the property tax reform, in which all homeowners currently have to submit information to the tax office, is still uncertain, it said.
