Saxony: Pirate Party examines contesting the Dresden mayor election

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Pirate Party is considering challenging the Dresden mayoral election, the second round of which is due on Sunday. Some voters were excluded from their right to vote through no fault of their own, the pirates justified their request on Friday. Because the postal voting documents were delivered too late or not at all. The approximately 98,000 postal voters from the first ballot should have their documents for the second round automatically sent to them. "Many are now - two days before the election - still waiting for the mail. Others are already on vacation far away from the state capital without being able to vote beforehand," the party complained and spoke of a "postal voting chaos".

According to the Dresden Pirates, they have called on affected voters to report to the party's social media channels. Together they want to examine the possibility of contesting the election. "The active right to vote is one of our most important fundamental rights. This cornerstone of our democracy must not be sawed off without further ado. It is therefore necessary to check whether this right has been violated - regardless of who wins the election," explained Steve König, head of the Dresdner pirates.
