Saxony: Police catch suspected thieves red-handed

Löbau/Görlitz (dpa/sn) - The police in Großschweidnitz in Upper Lusatia caught a suspected pair of thieves. The officials noticed the car of a 46-year-old and his 42-year-old companion at an intersection, as the police in Görlitz announced on Tuesday. During the inspection on Monday morning, the number plates turned out to be wrong. The man was also unable to give any conclusive explanations about the trailer he was carrying and the tools and machines he was transporting.

According to initial investigations, the machines and tools for laying cables worth several thousand euros were stolen from a van in Löbau. Because the equipment was too large, the suspects are said to have taken the trailer worth 6,000 euros from the neighboring property.

Shortly before the arrest, the man reached into the compartment in the side door of his car and swallowed a bag of pills, which were retrieved from his stomach at the hospital. The pills were about four grams of crystal.

The man and woman were brought before a magistrate. The 46-year-old had to go to prison. For the woman, the decision was still open.
