Saxony: Police: Eviction of the protest camp started peacefully

Ottendorf-Okrilla (dpa/sn) - From the police point of view, the evacuation of the occupied protest camp in a forest north of Dresden has started without any major incidents. "So far, the clearing of the forest area has been very quiet and above all peaceful," said police director Dirk Linczmajer on Wednesday evening. He attributed this, among other things, to discussions between the police and the activists. "With a few exceptions, several people have already left the camp on their own."

According to the police, ten investigations have been initiated so far. In most cases, officials resisted. In addition, the Narcotics and Explosives Act had been violated. The police did not give any details. "A woman who was glued to a pipe is receiving medical attention," police said. According to the information, more than 1,000 police officers were on duty on Wednesday.

The clearing of the forest area near Ottendorf-Okrilla in the district of Bautzen, which is called "Heibo" in local usage, began in the morning. The activists want to prevent the forest from being cut down for gravel extraction. The company KBO in Ottendorf-Okrilla wants to continue quarrying gravel in the region and has the license to do so.
