Dresden (dpa/sn) - The water and soil management in the regions in Saxony affected by structural change is to be examined. For this purpose, data on the water balance, the subsoil and the soil are recorded, compiled and evaluated, as the Ministry of the Environment announced on Sunday. A total of around eight million euros is available for the project, which started at the beginning of the year, until the end of 2026.
Environment Minister Wolfram Günther announced that 150 years of lignite mining have changed Lusatia and the Central German mining area massively. "The natural water balance is severely disturbed today and the landscapes have to be extensively renovated," said the Green politician. There is an urgent need for action, after all, water is also a location factor.
