Saxony: Refugee accommodation at the Dresden trade fair dissolved

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The city of Dresden has dissolved the temporary refugee accommodation on the grounds of the Dresden Exhibition Center. The city announced on Friday that the interim use of the trade fair will end as planned. A total of 137 refugees who had previously been accommodated in Hall 4 of the exhibition center were housed in dormitories and hotels. By the end of the second week of January, all halls should again be able to be used for trade fairs and events.

Another central location is the former Eventwerk in the north of Dresden, which is to be used as possible accommodation until the end of 2024. The state capital is actually planning decentralized accommodation for around 3,600 asylum seekers. However, there is still a lack of apartments for this. According to the city administration, the places in apartments for refugees are currently all occupied. The city must therefore temporarily resort to free rooms provided by hotel and dormitory operators.

Last year, a total of 1,548 asylum seekers were assigned to the city of Dresden. The city had initially assumed a higher number due to the announcement by the Free State, it said. However, the state directorate had postponed 400 of the allocations originally planned for 2022 to the first quarter of 2023.
