Saxony: relegation game: police announce large-scale operation

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Dresden police want to secure the relegation game of second division soccer team Dynamo Dresden against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Tuesday with a large number of more than 1000 police officers. The strategy for the operation was "basically communicative and aimed at de-escalation," said the Dresden police department on Monday.

"The stadium will be sold out, around 3,000 guest fans are expected. A clash between the fans of both teams should be avoided as far as possible," it said. The focus of the emergency services is on separating the fans on arrival and departure.

"In order to get a better overview of the traffic situation and the fans' arrival and departure, a police helicopter will also be deployed on the day of the match. Water cannons will also be present in the operational area as a precautionary measure," the police further announced.

The Dresden police are supported in their operations by the Saxon riot police, the Federal Police and officials from Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria.

A year ago there were serious riots on the sidelines of Dynamo Dresden's last game in the 3rd division. Hundreds of violent fans attacked police officers with pyrotechnics, and bottles and stones flew. 185 officers were injured, 30 were temporarily off duty and six hospitalized.
