Saxony: Saxony number two in tissue donation

Hanover/Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Saxony is the second strongest federal state when it comes to tissue donation. A total of 446 tissue donations were made in Bavaria last year, 102 of them at the University Hospital Leipzig (UKL), as the German Society for Tissue Transplantation (DGFG) announced on Tuesday. Most donations came from North Rhine-Westphalia (448), the fewest from Rhineland-Pflanz (13).

Nationwide, almost 7,000 tissues were donated last year, taking care of 7,111 people. Most of the tissue donated last year was cornea (almost 6,000 donations). This number increased by more than 300 compared to the previous year. In the Leipzig University Eye Clinic, 136 patients received a donor cornea.

Unlike organ donations, tissue donations are also possible a long time after death. A corneal donation is possible up to 72 hours after death - the relatives have some time to make a decision, emphasizes the DGFG.
