Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Senckenberg Natural History Collections Dresden (SNSD) have put new laboratories equipped with high-quality equipment into operation. This enabled research work on species and environmental protection as well as on the careful extraction of raw materials at an international level, as the Ministry of Science announced on Thursday in Dresden. The development of the laboratories was supported with a total of 4.5 million euros by the European Union and the Free State.

The SNSD has one of the largest collections of tissue samples and DNA in Europe. 7.5 million minerals, fossils and rocks of animals living and extinct today are kept there. Among other things, new cooling capacities have been created in the new rooms. In addition, rooms were created in which centuries-old animal preparations can be examined. The Ore Mountains and the raw materials available there can also be re-explored with new equipment.

The collection is part of the Senckenberg Nature Research Society. This is in possession of more than 40 million research objects. According to their own statements, the twelve institutions of the society have been researching nature for over 200 years - with reference to the past, the present and the future.
