Saxony: So far there have been few blue-green algae at reservoirs in Saxony

Pirna (dpa/sn) - Despite the summer heat, few blue-green algae have appeared on the Saxon reservoirs. There are currently no particular abnormalities compared to the two previous years, said a spokeswoman for the state dam administration (LTV) on Tuesday. However, with high temperatures and lots of sunshine, the development of blue-green algae could increase again until September. Some bodies of water are more affected than others. There is currently an increased proportion of blue-green algae at the Horstsee, Döllnitzsee and Göttwitzsee dams.

Blue-green algae are so-called cyanobacteria which, according to LTV information, are present in all surface waters over the course of the year. It only becomes problematic when they multiply en masse. Skin contact may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. The LTV examines 56 dams in Saxony once or twice a month for bacteria, among other things.
