Saxony: Sorbian footballers win preliminary round at Europeada in Carinthia

Sittersdorf (dpa/sn) - The Sorbs secured the group victory in the preliminary round at the European Football Championship for National Minorities (Europeada) by beating the Roma from Hungary 1-1. Before that there were two clear victories against the Cimbrians from northern Italy (4:0) and the Pomaks from Bulgaria (11:1). As the team announced on Wednesday, it was the expected difficult game against Roma. The opponent was remembered in the past for his physically very intensive style of play. The Sorbs took the lead through Jan Bogusz from SG Crostwitz, but had to concede an equalizer before the half-time break.

According to the Domowina - Bund Lausitzer concern - there are around 250,000 Roma in Hungary, but only about a quarter of them speak Romanes, the language of the Roma. However, since many Roma fear disadvantages if they confess to their people and for this reason tend to indicate a different nationality, it is assumed that there are more than 600,000 Roma in Hungary, it was said. Wednesday ended with a cultural festival at the Europeada. The Sorbian delegation in Pliberk presented the culture and language of the Lusatian Sorbs. The tournament in Carinthia and a Slovenian town lasts until Sunday.
