Saxony: State Minister for the Environment against the gas price cap and for budgets

Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony's Environment Minister Wolfram Günther (Greens) is against the introduction of a gas price cap. There are "many clever suggestions as to how costs can be shared in solidarity", such as a gas surcharge, he said in an interview with the "Sächsische Zeitung" (Saturday). However, it is also possible to allocate certain budgets. "If you consume more, it will be more expensive for you."

According to Günther, the gas storage facilities are well filled, but the sharply rising prices are worrying. "We have to help the households," he said in favor of further state aid. Households that are already short of cash and really can't afford any further price increases should not become insolvent; the burdens have to be "spread over many shoulders".

"We have to have tools that work in a targeted manner and depend on individual performance," said Günther. The situation must not become life-threatening for anyone. A crisis triggered by high energy prices must also be answered with social policy. "We then have to examine how we can get the money into the households that need it most."
