Saxony: stepson dies in fire: murder process has to start again

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - A good two years after the death of a 47-year-old man with walking disabilities in a fire in Beilrode (Northern Saxony district), the murder trial against the stepfather has to be rescheduled. A spokesman for the Leipzig Regional Court said on Tuesday that the reason for this was the new appointment to the criminal chamber due to the illness of a judge. The procedure for murder and arson against the 71-year-old had already begun on May 23 and will now start again on September 6.

The public prosecutor accuses the accused of having started the fire in order to risk a fresh start with an insurance sum in the six-figure range. He at least accepted the death of his partner's 47-year-old son, who had lived in the house, and acted insidiously. In the fire in June 2020, the victim suffered severe burns and died of smoke inhalation. Both the 71-year-old and his partner were taken to hospital with injuries.
