Saxony: student dormitories more expensive: semester fee may increase

Dresden (dpa / sn) - Due to the significantly increased prices, the Dresden student union is increasing the rental prices in the student dormitories. As of December 1st, the operating costs in all halls of residence of the Studentenwerk will be increased by EUR 26.99 per tenant per month. In addition, a significant increase in the semester fee is expected, the student union announced on Tuesday in Dresden.

In the economic plan of the Studentenwerk, an increase of 15 euros in the semester fee is planned for the coming year in order to be able to cover the costs incurred. If the Free State does not take into account the considerable cost increases for energy and food for the Saxon student unions in the budget, these will have to be borne by the students in the future.

Despite the effects of the corona pandemic, the semester fees of the students have remained stable since the summer semester 2020, said Udo Lehmann, acting managing director of the Studentenwerk Dresden. In addition, a meal was offered in every canteen at the socially acceptable price of 2.35 euros. "But mainly due to the currently significant cost increases, but also due to declining student numbers and wage increases for our staff, we can no longer continue on this course if the state does not act."

According to the Dresden student union, it has more than 550 employees and looks after a good 42,000 students in Dresden, Zittau and Görlitz. It takes care of financing your studies, catering in canteens and cafeterias, managing the dormitories, promoting culture and international exchanges.
