Dresden (dpa/sn) - In the mayoral election in Dresden on Sunday, there was initially a restrained participation in the polling stations. According to the municipal electoral office, 33.2 percent of those entitled to vote had cast their votes by 12 noon on Sunday. According to the electoral office, every fifth person entitled to vote cast their vote by post (21.5 percent).
In a polling station in the east of Dresden, there was also a lull until noon, as a dpa reporter reported. An election worker blamed the beautiful weather for this. Another said that there was "not that much going on" in the mayoral election anyway.
More than 434,000 Dresdeners are entitled to vote in this year's mayoral election. A second round of voting will take place on Sunday, July 10 if none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority of valid votes on June 12.
In addition to incumbent Dirk Hilbert (FDP), one candidate and four candidates from larger parties are up for election: Eva Jähnigen (Greens), Maximilian Krah (AfD), Albrecht Pallas (SPD), André Schollbach (Left) and Martin Schulte-Wissermann (Pirates). Jan Pöhnisch represents the party. There are also the individual candidates Marcus Fuchs - organizer of the Dresden "Querdenker" demos - and Sascha Wolff.
