Saxony: Thousands of donations: Grassi Museum expands collections

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The Grassi Museum for Applied Arts in Leipzig achieved a record number of new acquisitions in 2022. The museum announced on Friday that 5,752 objects from the fields of handicrafts, design and photography had been added. This is the largest expansion of the collections since the museum reopened in 2007. The museum received the largest part, 5591 objects, as donations. There were also 161 purchases. The Grassi Museum is planning six major special exhibitions this year.

According to its own statements, the museum has largely left the corona dent in visitor numbers behind. In 2022, a total of 73,000 guests were counted. This means that the pre-crisis level has almost been reached again. In 2019, the Grassi Museum had a record number of around 90,000 visitors.

The planned special exhibitions range from the "secret art of upholstery" with more than 100 pieces of seating furniture from three centuries to the photographer Herlinde Koelbl, who is known for her documentary pictures of politicians. From October 20th to 22nd, the Grassimesse is also on the program again, where contemporary design and handicrafts can be purchased.

This Sunday, a completely new exhibition space will also open in the museum - the so-called studio foyer. The room was initiated by a private donor, Professor Peter W. Schatt from Hamburg. Art Deco porcelain is presented in wall showcases.
