Saxony: Thousands of suggested names for young elephants in Leipzig

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - Within two weeks, the Leipzig Zoo received more than 8,500 name suggestions for the youngest member of its herd of elephants. Animal keepers should now make a pre-selection from the suggestions received via the website, by e-mail, letter or postcard, as the zoo announced on Friday. In the coming week, the public should then finally decide what the elephant boy, who was born on September 25th, should be called.

Despite the missing name, the scion of the herd is developing splendidly, the zoo said. The zoo's specification for the name of the elephant was that it should be euphonious and come from the Asian language area. Since the beginning of the Saxon autumn holidays on October 17, interested parties have been able to submit a proposal.

With the birth of the young elephant, the elephant cow Pantha became a mother for the first time at the age of ten, according to the zoo. The father of the young bull is Voi Nam, who was also born in Leipzig.
