Saxony: Transport companies receive 68 million euros in funding

Leipzig/Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) will receive 68 million euros from the state government for the "tram of the future". The first 25 trams of the latest generation, so-called low-floor trams, are to be bought with the funds, as the Ministry of Transport announced on Friday in Dresden. The procurement is part of a joint project of the LVB together with the municipal transport company Zwickau (SVZ) and the Görlitzer Verkehrsbetriebe (GVB).

The new trains should therefore be running from 2024 and gradually replace the 30-year-old vehicle stock. In order for them to be able to drive, however, the infrastructure of the tracks must be modernized.

Not only did local public transport benefit from the order placed last December, but also the Saxon economy, said Minister of Transport Martin Dulig (SPD): “The manufacturer consortium has locations in Leipzig, Grimma and Chemnitz, among other places. Significant parts of the value added, almost 40 percent , will therefore take place here in the Free State and thus also secure jobs."
