Saxony: TU Dresden receives a new administration building

The listed Fritz Foerster Building was erected around 100 years ago. The former home of the chemists at the TU Dresden had to be renovated because of significant contaminated sites. Now other departments are to find their place here.

Dresden (dpa/sn) - The Technical University of Dresden (TUD) has a new representative administration building in the heart of the campus. Finance Minister Hartmut Vorjohann (CDU) and Science State Secretary Andreas Handschuh handed over the converted and renovated Fritz Foerster building to TUD Rector Ursula Staudinger on Monday, as announced by the Saxon Ministry of Finance. The construction work began in 2014 and cost around 56.5 million euros.

The Free State of Saxony assumed most of the costs - around five million euros came from funds from the European Regional Development Fund. "The Fritz Foerster building with its imposing brick facade is one of the most striking buildings at the TU Dresden after the Beyer building. The listed, former research building of the chemical institutes was completely renovated," said Vorjohann. With the completion, the Excellence University of Dresden will get a representative administration building with 410 state-of-the-art workplaces.

At the handover, the TUD rector emphasized that an excellent university also needs an excellent campus. "According to this principle, we want to further develop the campus of the TU Dresden and combine the valuable historical building fabric with the new." With the Fritz-Foerster-Bau, this was an excellent success. "We are pleased that we can now fill this special monument in the heart of our campus with life," says Staudinger.

Due to the many years of use by the chemical institutes, significant contaminated sites caused headaches for many years. Accordingly, the central task was the particularly complex decontamination and odor neutralization of the building. In large parts, only the outer walls of the building could remain. The former laboratories have been converted into modern offices.

In the coming months, the departments of finance and procurement, human resources, studies and further training are to be united under one roof. The "Study Service Center" - the central contact point for students - was also given rooms in the Fritz Foerster building. In the future, the technical control center with security service will also move into the barrier-free building.
