Wildenfels/Zwickau (dpa/sn) - A trailer with cobblestones broke loose from a van in a collision on Autobahn 72 and spread its cargo across the lanes. The cause of the accident was a 22-year-old driver of a small van who drove up. He was slightly injured, as the police in Zwickau announced on Thursday. The stones damaged three other vehicles in the accident on Wednesday evening between the Hartenstein and Zwickau-Ost connections in the direction of Leipzig.
According to the police, the 22-year-old said he was frightened by a wild animal that suddenly appeared and therefore drove onto the trailer, which broke free and crashed into the central barrier. Some of the stones landed in the windshield of another van, but the 37-year-old driver was not injured. More stones fell on the lane and the oncoming lane, where two cars were damaged, driving over the stones. The freeway was completely closed for three hours until Thursday morning. The police estimate the damage at around 20,000 euros. The 22-year-old's van was no longer roadworthy.
