Saxony: Witness describes finding a dead baby in the murder trial

Leipzig/Wurzen (dpa/sn) - In the murder trial against a 33-year-old for killing her newborn in Wurzen, a witness who had discovered the body testified on Wednesday. On November 10, 2021, he looked in a refrigerator that was actually parked in the communal accommodation for workers at a fish factory because it suddenly worked again, said the 45-year-old. He was connected to the Leipzig Regional Court via video from Hungary on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old explained that there was a bag in the freezer that he initially suspected was meat for goulash. When he took a closer look, he discovered the baby's body and informed his superior.

The mother accused of murder had denied killing the newborn at the start of the trial last summer. After the birth in the toilet of a shared accommodation, someone snatched the baby from her, the 33-year-old testified. After that, she didn't see the child again. She said she hadn't noticed anything about the pregnancy beforehand.

The body was found to have blunt force injuries and stab wounds and lacerations to the neck. Ultimately, the newborn died of a pulmonary embolism. The public prosecutor accuses the Hungarian of murder with base motives. Accordingly, the mother is said to have killed the infant because she considered him a disruptive factor in her life planning. The defendant had only come to Germany to work a few months before the alleged crime. In Hungary she left behind six minor children. Five of them are currently being cared for by their paternal grandmother.

The 24-year-old partner of the accused and father of the boy, who had lived with the accused in the accommodation, was initially in custody. However, the investigation had not confirmed the suspicion against him, and he was released.

The pleadings were originally expected on Wednesday.
