Saxony: Wolves are looking for warm shelter in the hay store

Dresden (dpa / sn) - wolves have apparently taken over a barn on the outskirts of Gablenz (Görlitz district) as winter quarters. In the past week, employees of an agricultural company saw a wolf coming out of the open barn on two days, the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology announced on Thursday. The barn is used as a hay store and storage area for agricultural equipment. Wildlife cameras have now confirmed that at least two wolf pups are regularly in the barn or going in and out.

"The young animals sometimes show signs of mange. The hay storage apparently serves as a warm and dry place to sleep, which the animals regularly used as a retreat in view of the winter temperatures of the past few days, especially when there is little human activity," it said. There are no signs that the young wolves are looking for human contact. In the case of sick wolves, however, the natural escape behavior can be delayed. Therefore, the experts recommend chasing the animal away by shouting or clapping your hands, but not driving it into a corner.

Similar sightings have also been reported from other regions of Saxony in the past few days, the state office said. The authority asked the population to report sightings or encounters with wolves.
