Bautzen (dpa / sn) - Three bombs from the Second World War were detonated on the site of the Saxon police academy in Bautzen. According to the police on Wednesday, they were found together with other ammunition parts such as bazooka heads, throwable grenades and several boxes of rusted shell casings during earthworks. A fire extinguishing pond was to be uncovered on the university campus.
Experts from the Saxon police's explosive ordnance disposal service had assessed that the bombs were not transportable. They were therefore blown up in a controlled manner at the site where they were found. Surrounding residential buildings did not have to be cleared because of the low explosive force of the World War II bombs. There was no danger for the residents or members of the university.
According to the police, the explosive devices found were German-made and were mostly dropped from airplanes during World War II. The university area was used as barracks in the past. Construction work currently underway there would be accompanied by a specialist company with expertise in ammunition.
