Scotland Sturgeon's husband arrested over SNP funding

Peter Murrell, husband of former Scotland chief minister Nicola Sturgeon, has been arrested on Wednesday in connection with an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP), the BBC reported.

Police Scotland, however, has not provided the identity of the detainee, but says that a 58-year-old man was arrested this morning in Scotland and is being held at a police station, where he is questioned by detectives.

The agents also search several homes as part of the investigation into the finances of the formation in power of the Scottish autonomous government, added the Police, which has pointed out that it is an ongoing investigation.

Without specifying the reasons, Sturgeon submitted his resignation as chief minister and leader of the SNP last February, which gave way to an internal election, which gave victory to the continuation candidate, Humza Yousaf.

Last month, Murrell tendered his resignation as chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), following speculation that he could submit to a vote of no confidence by members of the SNP Executive.

Murrell's resignation was effective immediately and came amid discontent in the ranks of the party over the drop in the number of members of the nationalist party and alleged irregularities in the party's finances.

In May 2021, the then SNP National Treasurer, Douglas Chapman, resigned after less than a year in office on the grounds that he had "not received the necessary financial information" to carry out his duties.
