After being attacked with golf clubs in an aggravated burglary at Sion Mills, County Tyrone, a man sustained injuries.
Police said that they received a report from three men who tried to force their way into Primrose Park's house at 09:15 BST Wednesday.
The victim suffered injuries to his head and face.
According to reports, the ordeal lasted about 15 minutes before the suspects fled.
Ambulance personnel responded to the call and officers from the police were present to investigate.
"This was a frightening ordeal for the victim, in what appears to be a savage assault," Det Insp Finlay stated.
"We are working to determine what happened, who was involved, and what the motive was."
Senior officers appealed to anyone in the area who saw anything suspicious to call the police.
He added, "We are also interested in hearing from anyone who witnessed a grey-colored Mercedes in the vicinity around this time or captured its movements using their dashcam."
