Smudo injured his knee: Fanta 4 rapper returns after falling on stage

Michael Bernd Schmidt is better known as Smudo, rapper of the legendary German hip hop group "Fantastischen Vier". During a performance in August, Smudo injured himself in front of 14,000 fans, now he is making his comeback on stage.

When the Fantastischen Vier performed as part of the Lollapalooza Festival on Sunday evening on the grounds of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the injured rapper Smudo (real name Michael Bernd Schmidt) and his bandmates were also on the Main Stage South. Until then, the fans had jittered whether the musician, who had torn the patellar tendon in his knee in a stage fall at the end of August, would perform.

Shortly before the performance, however, the management of the German spoken word legends had already given the all-clear and announced that the quartet would perform, including Smudo. Speculations that the 54-year-old could do the show sitting down were countered in the evening himself: he did the first show since the accident while standing – with a large grey-black leg splint.

The rapper injured himself during the encore at a show in Bonn. "My knee," he groaned, bandmate Thomas D. was stunned and informed the 14,000 fans in front of the stage: "It's not a stunt, it's real!" A day after his stage accident, Smudo personally contacted his fans. He revealed via Instagram what exactly happened and how he was doing in the meantime. "There are worse places to jump through the patellar tendon than at the end of the tour on stage. Thanks to everyone for the touching wishes for recovery," wrote the Swabian, who has lived in Hamburg for many years, under a photo of the performance.

He also apologized for the postponement of the planned concert in Osnabrück and explained his state of health: "OP this morning went 1a. Mood is good. 6 weeks track". The Fantastischen Vier ("Die Da!?!") are regarded as the pioneers of German recitative, and in 1989 the band gave their first concert under this name.
