Twitter shares fell on Thursday following the publication by the Washington Post of an article stating that Elon Musk's takeover of the social networking site would be severely compromised by concerns about spam.

According to reports, the Tesla and SpaceX bosses have reportedly stopped negotiations with one investor who was supposed to be contributing to the acquisition Twitter for $44 Billion.

Musk's team is now convinced that the fake Twitter accounts figures are not reliable. One source familiar with the matter advised them to take drastic measures.

After a slight upswing (1.52%), the Wall Street title of the Californian firm lost more than 4 percent during electronic trading.

Elon Musk repeatedly challenged the accuracy of the information transmitted by Twitter about spam and fake accounts, and the measures put in place to stop their spread.

After Musk threatened to withdraw his offer in a document, the board of directors of the group agreed to allow Elon Musk access the mountain of data he needed to answer his questions.

The world's wealthiest man and his team decided to analyze the raw data to see if fake accounts really make up less than 5% of Twitter users daily active.

"At this stage with an offer of $54.20 per shares and a stock about $39, market is clearly skeptical about whether the transaction will occur at the expected price," stated Dan Ives, Wedbush, in a note.

He said that the chances of the deal being done are around 60% with a renegotiated share price of between $42 and $45 per share.

Elon Musk could face serious legal action if he ends his commitment to purchase Twitter. In certain situations, both parties have agreed to pay $1 billion in severance pay.
