Spain Declared a forest fire in the Zaragoza town of Mequinenza, on the border with Catalonia

A forest fire declared this Saturday in the Zaragoza town of Mequinenza, near the border with Catalonia, has set off alarms and troops from Aragon and Catalonia have been mobilized to extinguish it. They have already burned between 300 and 400 hectares between both communities.

The flames originated around 4:30 p.m. in a very mountainous area with very difficult access, a factor that, together with the strong gusts of wind, has caused the fire to advance towards the Catalan slope and nearby towns such as Almatret and Maials.

At the moment, the causes that led to the start of the fire are unknown. The advanced command post has been located on the La Granja d'Escarp road and the A-2414 remains closed to traffic.

Three helicopter crews, two subtibombs and two crews from the Government of Aragon are working on the ground. On the part of Catalonia, two planes based in Reus from the Ministry and eight firefighters have been displaced. At the moment, the strong wind prevents air resources from acting.

Two kilometers from the place where the fire started, a "rave" was called for this Saturday, which has forced the closure of the accesses to that area and the evacuation of about forty people who had attended the party, according to sources. of the Mossos d'Esquadra.

Several users have shared on social networks images of a huge column of smoke that could be seen from the right bank of the Mequinenza reservoir, in the province of Zaragoza.

The Government of Aragon has activated level 0 of the Special Emergency Civil Protection Plan for Forest Fires (Procinfo), which applies to fires that "affect only assets of a forest nature, land intended for agricultural cultivation or assets other than these, for which it is not necessary to adopt specific civil protection measures, but measures aimed at guaranteeing the security of the action groups may be necessary".
