The Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, has resumed this Thursday the attacks on the Popular Party for the non-renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). She has done so in an appearance at her own request in the Justice Commission of Congress, in which she has accused the popular of not respecting the result of the elections.

The Government had abandoned the debate on the renewal of the Cosnejo after getting its members to renew the Constitutional Court and this came to have a majority more prone to the Executive. The minister has returned the debate to the critical tone in which it came to be. After criticizing the PP for its attitude in the face of the imminent motion of no confidence, pointing out that they are hostages of the extreme right, Llop has gone to the Council: "If we intend to wait for some responsibility from the main opposition party, the wait can be very long. I give you a figure: 1,562. These are the days that the Council has been without being renewed, 1,562 days, one after another, in breach of the Constitution".

According to the minister, the responsibility does not lie with the Government, nor with the Courts, which are the ones that formally renew the CGPJ, but falls "only" on the PP. "It is due to the refusal of the PP that the Council continues without being renewed, exclusively. Refusal to what? To accept the composition of the Parliament, refusal to accept the legitimacy of the elections, refusal to fulfill its constitutional duties. I remind you, ladies and gentlemen, that they complied with the Constitution when they acquired the status of deputies "Unreason, stubbornness, lack of sense of State... What are we facing? Faced with a minority blocking a majority, subverting the functioning of democracy".

The minister has made it clear that the Government supports the current system of election of the CGPJ, which means that its 20 members must be chosen in the last instance by the Cortes. "Justice emanates from the people", she has summarized. The argument presented by the PP for not agreeing to the renewal is that the European recommendation that the members of judicial extraction -12 of the 20- must not go through any political filter must be complied with.

Llop has mentioned those European institutions that claim it - the Council of Europe - but not to highlight that point, but rather to highlight something that they also claim: that a minority cannot block a majority for a long time.

"What less than to start this appearance by asking the PP to return to the constitutional consensus. It is never too late. The debate is no longer just the renewal, but compliance with the Constitution. Do you respect the constitution, gentlemen of the PP? Do you respect the separation of powers?", insisted the minister.

Next, Llop has asked the PP to support the judicial laws that are in process and that seek to streamline public service. "I ask them for height of sights, even if it is with a dropper," he said, making it clear that he had no hope of that being the case. "The refusal to support these laws together with the CGPJ reflects the desire to patrimonialize the Judiciary."

In his response to Llop, the PP deputy Luis Santamaría has been "surprised" by the tone of his intervention, "between scolding and moralizing". After asking the Minister of Justice to present her resignation, he has recovered messages from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in which he advocated "depoliticizing" the Council and that political parties not intervene in his election.
