Admiral General Antonio Martorell Lacave, who had held the position of Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy (AJEMA) since February 2021, died this Friday in Madrid, as reported by the Ministry of Defense.

"It is a very sad day for the Ministry of Defense, for the Navy and for all the Armed Forces," the Ministry of Defense lamented in a statement, whose head, Margarita Robles, has already conveyed her condolences to her family and friends.

The Council of Ministers appointed Martorell Lacave after his predecessor, Admiral Teodoro López Calderón, was appointed Chief of the Defense Staff (JEMAD).

Martorell, married with three children, was born in Bilbao on August 22, 1960 and obtained the job of lieutenant in the General Corps of the Navy in 1984.

He was a graduate of the General Staff, a specialist in Submarine Weapons and throughout his career he was deputy commander, chief of Operations and chief of the Combat System, and later commander of the Minesweeper Miño, the Turia minehunter and the amphibious assault ship Castilla, among others. .

In NATO, he held positions as head of the EU Area of ​​the General Directorate for Defense Policy, head of the Logistics Division, commander of the Naval Action Group 2, admiral of Naval Action, commander of Operation Atalanta and commander of the General Headquarters Maritime High Availability.
