Stade de France fiasco: UEFA to reimburse England fans

Pointed out in an independent investigative report after the Champions League final fiasco at the Stade de France, UEFA – which had responded by criticizing French law enforcement – decided to refund all tickets Liverpool supporters who could not or had difficulty accessing the stadium, the European body announced in a press release. The European organization will pay the Liverpool club its entire allocation, i.e. 19,618 tickets, and will then charge it to organize reimbursements.

"We recognize the negative experiences of these fans" on May 28, 2022, "and through this program we will compensate those who purchased tickets and who were most affected by the difficulty accessing the stadium," said said Theodore Theodoridis, UEFA General Secretary.

The independent investigation commissioned by UEFA concluded that the sports body was "primarily responsible" for these serious incidents, also criticizing the use by French police of tear gas and pepper spray. Above all, this report completely clears the fans of the Reds, initially accused of having arrived late at the stadium and of having massively presented falsified tickets.

According to UEFA, Real Madrid fans and other spectators affected by the chaos at the Stade de France may also seek compensation, but on a case-by-case basis.
